Breaking News: Martin Wheeler Crowned British BBQ Champion 2016

Martin Wheeler of the University of Reading has been crowned the 2016 Champion at this year’s British BBQ Battle, which took place today (Wednesday 15 June) in the grounds of the prestigious Blenheim Palace.

Eight finalists were chosen to compete and had to prepare a 3-course meal on a BBQ and that could be cooked within the specified one hour time frame. Lloyd Logan of Baxterstory was winner in the Leisure & Contract Caterers category, Dave Alebon of Stonegate the winner of the Pubs, Bars & Restaurants category and Gerald Quadros of The Lensbury the Hotels winner.

Martin Wheeler’s winning dishes were a starter of Hot Smoked Eel, Barbecue Apple Sauce and Celeriac Waldorf Salad, a main of Hogget Lamb Cannon with a Beetroot Khubz, Burnished Kale and Peppers with a Sweet Chilli Sauce and Baba Ganoush. The dessert was Coconut Sponge, Mango Chutney, Caramelised Mango and a Pina Colada Sabayon.

CLH News Editor Peter Adams was in attendance and said, “The incredible standard of chefs this year produced some truly stunning dishes. I certainly didn’t envy the judges their decision!”

The expert panel of judges include Ben Bartlett, BBQ Champion & President of the British BBQ Association; Bill Verity, President of Crown Verity;
Gareth Finney, 2015 BBQ Battle Champion and Jim Eaves of the British Culinary Foundation. The judges scored the chefs not only on the taste and
appearance of their final dishes, but for BBQ cooking techniques too.

The eight finalists comprised of:-

Leisure & Contract Caterers:
• Logan Lloyd – Baxterstorey
• Simon Rapkin – Food Events Ltd

Pubs, Bars & Restaurants:
• Phillip Hunt – Marston’s Inns & Taverns
• Dave Alebon – Stonegate

Universities:
• Ash Spencer – Westminster Kingsway College
• Martin Wheeler – University of Reading

Hotels:
• Gerald Quadros – The Lensbury
• Martin Baker – Ston Easton Park

The chefs cooked their dishes on Crown Verity BBQ’s supplied by UK exclusive distributor for the brand, R H Hall. All dishes cooked included at least one Lion sauce from the choice of BBQ, hot sauces, salsas and chutneys, mustards, mayonnaise and dressings.

All 8 finalists were rewarded with a Sharp Commercial Microwave, Smeg Mixer, Simply Stainless Professional Chef’s table and exclusive British BBQ Battle chef’s whites.
