Online shopping offers huge choice and attractive prices, but buyers need to beware of ‘Internet only dealers’. Paul McAndrew, MD of leading equipment supplier Fridgeland explains:
“An internet only dealer is normally a single person business with just a phone and a laptop, often working from home. They may have a website which looks like any other real company, but they are far from what they appear to be on the web. In fact at Fridgeland we have seen some of these copy parts of our website!
“The problems associated with internet only dealers are numerous; they usually sell with ‘Parts Only’ warranties, are unlikely to have insurance and they don’t really know if the products they are selling work properly or are safe. After buying from an internet only dealer customers often find that the supplier doesn’t carry spares, has no engineers, they have no warranty for the goods they have bought and often the supplier has gone out of business and vanishes. When buying essential and often high value equipment the message is clear, avoid internet only dealers at all costs!”
Some simple checks can flag if a company is in fact an internet only dealer;
1. Ask to see a copy of Product or Public Liability Insurance (this should be for £1m)
2. Ask to see evidence of actual stock with their company logo in a real warehouse
3. See if there is more than one person who answers the phone
4. Finally, check if the supplier is offering Full Parts and Labour Warranty (not Parts Only Warranty)
Any genuine supplier will be able to satisfy all of these simple checks.
