Future Chefs Invited To Quayside Masterclass

A special culinary event to be held in Fowey to share skills and experience with the county’s up and coming young chefs and hospitality stars of the future.

Chef Craft will take place on the quayside in Fowey from 10:00am on June 28. The day-long event will be led by Nick Hemming, catering development manager for St Austell Brewery, and celebrity chef James Strawbridge.

The masterclass will be open to young people already working in the industry who are interested in developing their skills as well as those keen to find out more about career opportunities in the catering trade.

Throughout the day, Nick and James will be running demonstrations and workshops to highlight a variety of skills and techniques, with a specific focus on grill cooking and successful beer and food matching, which will be a feature at Havener’s, the Brewery’s new restaurant opening in Fowey next month.

James Strawbridge, of Hungry Sailors and Saturday Farm fame, has been working with St Austell Brewery to develop Havener’s Bar and Grill, based on Town Quay in the heart of Fowey. James will be the executive head chef at the new restaurant, which will offer a seafood-led menu in an informal, modern setting enjoying one of the best waterside locations in the region.

Nick Hemming, catering development manager for St Austell Brewery, said: “Young people looking at careers today have a host of industries vying for their attention. Chef Craft is a chance for people considering catering and hospitality as an option, and for those already working in the industry who are keen to progress, to spend time with some great chefs in a relaxed environment and find out more about opportunities with companies like St Austell Brewery which is developing new sites like Havener’s.”

James Strawbridge said: “Chef Craft is a great opportunity for young people to come and spend some time with myself and Nick and learn more about the trade. We’ll be on the quayside hosting workshops and staging demonstrations but mostly we’ll be having fun using lots of different ingredients and showing off a variety of grill and BBQ techniques.”

During the day, visitors will be invited to take part in a grilling Invention Test using smoked mackerel, with the most creative work being rewarded with a fabulous, engraved I.O. Shen Chef’s knife, spices and ale.

Havener’s Bar and Grill is due to open in July after a substantial renovation. New manager Rob Peperell has joined St Austell Brewery from fellow family brewers Young’s. Having run The Lamb hotel and pub at Hindon, Rob is now living in Fowey with his family and is currently recruiting for front of house and kitchen staff.

The menu at Havener’s will feature a range of seafood dishes including a beef and oyster burger, the Havener’s gumbo and popular classics like Hungry Sailor fish pie and Tribute Pale Ale battered fish & chips.
