Parliamentary Pub Chef Of The Year Competition Takes Off

Following the huge success of the British Beer & Pub Association Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year Competition in 2016, the BBPA has launched the 2017/18 awards in partnership with the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group and supported by Nestlé Professional.

With two categories, Pub Chef and Young Pub Chef, this year’s competition looks set to surpass last year’s inaugural contest, which was devised so that MPs could join forces with local pubs across the country, to celebrate the hugely talented pub chefs, and great pub food, in their constituencies.

Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds said:

“With pubs serving around a billion meals each year it is important to recognise the contribution pub chefs make to the eating out experience in this country. The outstanding range of culinary options that span from breakfast to evening meals demonstrates the huge wealth of creativity and skill in our kitchens, big and small.

“Many leading, well-known celebrity chefs have ventured into the pub arena helping to further boost the quality of food in pubs whilst still making it an affordable treat. Our aim is to highlight the talented chefs around the country, help spot future stars and encourage more young people to consider training and working as a chef in a pub.”

Mike Wood, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group, commented:

“With well over 100 MPs nominating chefs in their constituencies last time round, I am sure the competition will be well supported in this parliament. Pub food has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and its great that through competitions like the Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year we are able to recognise that.”

George Vezza, Managing Director of Nestlé Professional® commented:

“We’re particularly excited to be sponsoring an award that recognises those doing their best to secure a bright future for our pub sector. Pubs are being increasingly recognised as venues where both chefs and bar staff can get really creative with food and beverages. Shouting about these opportunities will play a major part in encouraging the rejuvenation of pubs and the wider hospitality industry.

“Fostering the next generation of talent is something we’re passionate about at Nestlé Professional®. Our Toque d’Or competition for student and apprentice chefs is just one example of this commitment and we’re proud that a number of former competitors now have jobs in pubs. Sponsoring the Parliamentary Pub Chef Award is a natural extension of this passion and we wish all entrants the best of luck.”

Nominations run until 27th October when the chefs will be judged by a panel of industry experts including the acclaimed TV guest chef presenter and former Michelin Star holder, Paul Merrett. Paul’s passion for developing young people within his own business, The Victoria, Sheen, SW London, and Director of Jolly Fine Pubs makes him the ideal choice for supporting and judging the awards.

“Nothing is more rewarding than seeing young people come into my kitchen full of enthusiasm and energy and watch them develop into chefs that have the ability to create fantastic food for our guests,” said Paul. “The quality of entries last year was outstanding and I am extremely excited to see the upcoming range of talent around the country who have come to the notice of their local MPs, demonstrating the important role they play in a local pub’s business.”

Second round judging will take place in December with the final cook off taking place in January 2018. More information on how to enter can be found here.
