The county has enjoyed an astounding 2014, with its hosting of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France labelled the ‘grandest ever’, and has now been named Europe’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards 2014.
Capping an already successful night for Yorkshire by winning the award for Europe’s Leading Destination, the county’s tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire also won Europe’s Leading Marketing Campaign for the third time.
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “This is yet more evidence that Yorkshire continues to be the premier European travel destination by winning this prestigious award. It is a tribute to the 12 months of hard work that has gone into making this year the most successful year of all time for the county.
“These awards are some of the biggest in international tourism, and it makes me very proud to see Yorkshire at the top.”
Vikki Harris, head of marketing for Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We continuously strive to come up with new and innovative ways to market Yorkshire and all it has to offer. I am incredibly proud for the marketing team that we’ve won one of the biggest marketing awards in tourism.”
Yorkshire has now won Europe’s Leading Destination for two years in a row, having last year been the first location other than a major city or country to win the award. This year, Yorkshire has beaten European cities such as Florence, Geneva and Rome to the award.
Welcome to Yorkshire is also the first organisation to have won Europe’s Leading Marketing Campaign three times, this year beating campaigns by Thomas Cook and Thomson, among others.
Welcome to Yorkshire has won 9 European and World Travel Awards since it launched in 2009 beating globally recognised travel brands and some of the world’s leading destination management organisations.
The World Travel Awards are voted for by travel and tourism professionals from across the world
