The regional winners (listed below) were handpicked by an expert judging panel led by renowned food critic Charles Campion.
- The Granville, Canterbury (South England)
- The Narrow Boat at Weedon, Northampton (Midlands)
- The Blue Pig, Manchester (North England)
- Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd (Wales)
- Kyloe Restaurant, Edinburgh (Scotland)
Judges focused on pubs’ carefully sourced ingredients, well cooked food, excellent service and positive customer feedback.
Each pub (except the national winner, who will take the grand prize of £10k PR support) has won £2,500 of PR support to help make them famous for their roast. They’ve also all won a shot at being crowned with the title of Best British Roast Dinner 2016.
The national winner will be decided once an expert team of mystery diners has visited each of the pubs to decide which of their roasts really cuts the mustard and deserves to win the title of Best British Roast Dinner 2016.
Chris Brown, channel trade marketing manager at Unilever Food Solutions, said: “The standard of entries this year has been phenomenal, so our regional winners can be extremely proud. Hopefully they’ve all got some extra tables around too – previous competition winners have seen huge spikes in their bookings following their success in this competition.
“For these pubs, it’s a time to celebrate – but it’s important they keep focus too. The national title and the grand prize of £10k of PR support are still there for the taking. And one of them will be the pub to take both – so keep an eye out on Sunday 2 October 2016 to see which pub will be crowned with the title of Best British Roast Dinner 2016.”
Since winning the title in 2015, The Larwood and Voce has smashed its record number of covers, with reservations jumping 60%.
Leroy Allen, executive chef of The Larwood and Voce, said: “Winning Best British Roast Dinner has done wonders for us. Before we were shortlisted, we averaged about 170 covers on a Sunday. We now have over 270 covers Sunday after Sunday.”
The Best British Roast Dinner competition is part of British Roast Dinner Week. The campaign – sponsored by Colman’s® and supported by KNORR® – aims to show pubs that roasts aren’t just for Sundays and encourages them to boost their profits by serving the UK’s favourite pub meal[ every day.
