British Pub Week 2016 which took place Friday, 28th October to Saturday, 5th November this year aims to celebrate the importance of the great British pub and its role at the heart of communities across the UK.
Founder of British Pub Week, Inez Ward, and the Chair of the parliamentary Save the Pub group, Greg Mulholland MP, co-hosted the November 2nd event which was held in the Red Lion on Parliament Street.
The event was attended by MPs and peers of all parties, the British Beer and Pub Association, and journalists and volunteers from the pub trade.
A parliamentary motion to celebrate British Pub Week was also tabled and received cross-party backing.
Shortly before the Red Lion event, Greg Mulholland had hosted a Save the Pub group meeting with community pubs minister Andrew Percy to discuss key issues affecting pubs.
These ranged from the implementation of the pubs code, pubs in the planning system, the new business rates system and maintaining the beer duty freeze.
Commenting, Greg Mulholland MP said:
“The Save the Pub Group are delighted to support British Pub Week and it was great to have Community Pubs Minister Andrew Percy MP joining MPs, peers and people from the pub sector to celebrate the great British pub. Pubs are hugely important to the communities they serve, to the local and national economy, to tourism and are part of our history and heritage. I also commend Chair of British Pub Week, Inez Ward, for this initiative that allows all who value pubs to highlight the role they play in our society and to celebrate them.
“It was also great to discuss with Andrew the need for the Government to show its support for pubs and the Save the Pub Group look forward to working with him and his team for the benefit of pubs in every part of the United Kingdom.
“Save the Pub Group members are all encouraged to visit pubs in their constituency during British Pub Week and to continue to support the pub in both Houses of Parliament and we hope people up and down the country will visit and support their local pubs too. The Save the Pub Group also thanks all publicans and staff who work so hard to run Britain’s pubs and we raise a toast to them in British Pub Week.”
British Pub Week founder Inez Ward added:
“British Pub Week is about celebrating pubs right across the country and uniting the pub trade in doing so. The event at the Red Lion was well attended and it was especially great to have the community pubs minister there. Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend and show their support for the week.”
Community Pubs Minister Andrew Percy MP said:
“It was great to be at the British Pub Week event held in the Red Lion. It was an excellent way to celebrate the role of pubs up and down the country, so well done to Inez Ward and Greg Mulholland for organising it. I would certainly encourage colleagues and pubgoers to make a special trip to their pub this week to celebrate what it does for their community. That’s what British Pub Week is all about and I wish this annual event success in future years.”
