The time has come to crown the triumphant winner of Duel of the Dishes Christmas 2016. The victor was decided through an online, knockout competition which saw veggie main courses from festive menus pitted against each other in a public vote until only one remained. The winning main of the Duel of the Dishes 2016 is a ‘Trio of beetroot tart tatin with fennel caramel, served with a rocket, fennel and ruby grapefruit salad’ from the University of Winchester.
The final saw the University of Winchester competing for the crown with Blackberry Grove from New Brighton. Blackberry Grove’s dish was an ‘Artichoke and wild mushroom strudel accompanied by parsnips, Chantenay carrots, tender stem broccoli, roast potatoes, festive red cabbage, sautéed Brussels sprouts with orange zest and sage stuffing’.
John Soonaye from the Vegetarian Society said: “The creativity and imagination of the Duel of the Dishes 2016 competitors’ veggie main courses has been outstanding. We have eagerly watched the excitement unfold over the last few weeks, seeing university caterers, chains and independent restaurants all battling it out to be crowned the Duel of the Dishes 2016 champion.
“The public have voted, and a winner has been chosen. Congratulations to the University of Winchester, whose festive veggie main course of a ‘Trio of beetroot tart tatin with fennel caramel, served with a rocket, fennel and ruby grapefruit salad’ is the winner of Duel of the Dishes 2016.”
