The ten finalists in the highly regarded Kikkoman Masters Chefs Competition have been announced. The ten finalists will be go on to compete for the coveted title and win a seven-day trip to Japan.
Judges including TV Chef Brian Turner CBE; David Mulcahy, Craft Guild of Chefs, Simon Hulstone Chef/Owner at Michelin-starred restaurant The Elephant in Torquay and Bing-yu of Kikkoman UK got their heads together this week to scrutinise entries and select the ten finalists.
Chefs are required to devise a two-course menu using Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce as integral to the dish.
Simon Hulstone said “Each year the standard of entries gets better and better and this year the standard again exceeded expectations. We have seen an increase in many unusual ingredients and the final 10 chefs have certainly produced some inspirational dishes.”
Bing-yu Lee, Kikkoman UK Manager added “We were delighted with the response from chefs this year. In addition to the high standard of entries it’s clear that chefs are thinking very carefully about their entries before submitting their final dishes. This year there was no restriction on the style of cuisine so we’ve seen a big increase in the number of Oriental influenced dishes.”
The final of this prestigious catering competition will take place at the Restaurant Show on Monday 2nd October from 2pm. All the above judges with the addition of last year’s winner, Michael Wickham from RAC Club, will be there to watch the finalists recreate their starter and main course and pick a worthy winner. The finalists will have just 90 minutes to create their dishes using meat or fish in either course.
