Head chef of the 2 AA Rosette Murrays Restaurant at Whittlebury, Harvey Lockwood, has been named Chef of the Year at the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards 2018/19.
The hotel’s fine-dining restaurant Murrays was also named runner up in the Restaurant of the Year category, sponsored by Whitco Catering and Bakery Equipment Ltd, at the ceremony, which was held on Wednesday 7 November at the Royal & Derngate in Northampton.
The Chef of the Year award, sponsored by Dawn Farms, was a hard-fought competition with two cook-offs involved – firstly, Harvey was challenged to put his own twist on two set dishes: Mrs Beeton’s duck braised with turnips, and Northamptonshire cheesecake. This was followed by a Masterchef-style technical challenge to produce deep-fried goujons of plaice with tartare sauce.
Murrays’ demi chef de partie, Deniz Gultez was also shortlisted in the ‘Booker Young Chef of the Year’ award, sponsored by Booker for chefs aged 18-25.
Operations director of Whittlebury Hall, Bernhard Zechner, said: “I am incredibly proud of all the Murrays team – for Harvey to win Chef of the Year is an amazing personal accolade, but to win runner up in the restaurant category and for Deniz to also be shortlisted is a testament to the strength of the whole team. The Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards celebrate the exceptional food and drink in the county, and Whittlebury is very proud to be a part of that.”
